Crafting Overview
Use crafting to turn simple loot into survival tools, food sources, medical supplies, and defensive gear.
Early Survival
Craft rope, knives, hooks, fireplaces, bags, and basic survival tools to get through the early game.
Food, Fire & Warmth
Fishing, trapping, cooking, fire-starting, and farming recipes help you stay fed and warm.
Gear & Defense
Craft bags, ghillie pieces, improvised weapons, traps, and useful defensive tools.
Core Crafting
Essential early-game tools and primitive survival items.

Fishing, Hunting & Trapping
Craft tools to catch food and survive in the wilderness.

Bait Improves Traps
Hooks, bottle traps, and fish net traps work better when baited. Dig up worms with a knife in an emergency, or use a shovel, pickaxe, or hoe to get more worms per dig.
After catching fish, gut and prepare them with a knife before cooking. Wear gloves or wash your hands afterward to avoid sickness.
For a deeper breakdown of bait, fishing spots, hooks, and cooking fish safely, use the DayZ fishing guide.
Snare Bait
Rabbit snares need bait and time. Worms can attract chickens, while fruit can attract rabbits. Leave the area and check back later.
Tripwire Warning
Tripwires can hold an explosive device, but infected can also trigger them. Be careful placing them near high-traffic zombie areas.
Tools & Material Processing
Convert raw resources into usable crafting materials.

Barbed Wire Condition Matters
Barbed wire can be converted into metal wire with pliers, but badly damaged barbed wire may ruin during the conversion. Try to use better-condition wire when possible.
Gear, Clothing & Insulation
Improve storage, warmth, camouflage, and environmental protection.

Hand Wraps Help with Bloody Hands
If your hands are bloody, wearing gloves or improvised hand wraps can stop the bloody-hands effect while they are equipped.
This is temporary protection. If the gloves or wraps become ruined, the bloody-hands problem returns, so wash your hands at water or disinfect them when possible.
Bloody hands, cuts, wet clothing, and bad insulation can all turn into bigger survival problems. The DayZ health guide covers the sickness and recovery side of those mistakes.
Foot Wraps Are Emergency Shoes
If your shoes are badly damaged or ruined, improvised foot wraps can help stop constant foot cuts while you search for better footwear.
They do not last as long as proper shoes, but they can keep you alive long enough to escape a bad situation.
Rope Belt Is Useful Early
A rope belt is a simple early-game utility belt that can hold knives and free up inventory space when you do not have better clothing or a vest.
Shelters & Storage
Craft temporary shelter and storage options for hidden camps, starter bases, and long-term survival.

Shelter & Storage Tip
Wooden crates can be stored inside bases or buried with a shovel. Shelters are useful for hidden camps because they provide storage and protection without needing a full base.
Improvised stick shelters can blend into wooded areas better than more obvious storage, making them useful for low-profile wilderness stashes.
Shelters and crates are great starter storage, but once you need gates, locks, fences, and longer-term protection, move into the DayZ base building guide.
Medical & Health
Treat injuries, illness, and blood loss to stay alive.

Splint Tip
A splint helps stabilize a broken leg so you can move without repeatedly passing out. Avoid sprinting before using one.
IV Saline Is a Strong Recovery Item
IV Saline can help restore blood and water after heavy bleeding or infected damage. One bag will not fully recover you from empty blood, but it gives a strong boost.
Fire, Cooking & Heat
Stay warm, cook food, and survive harsh weather conditions.

Fire Placement Matters
A simple fireplace placed inside most buildings usually cannot be lit. Use proper indoor stoves/fireplaces or build fires outside.
Stone Oven Advantage
A stone oven can cook with pots and pans while blocking some of the light from the fire, making it better for longer camps.
Fire Barrel & Gas Stove
Fire barrels give off less light than campfires, while gas stoves are quick and dim but rely on finite canister fuel.
Freeform Fire Tip
You can light bark, paper, rags, or bandages as kindling and then add short sticks or firewood as fuel. Firewood lasts longer than sticks.
Cooking on a sharpened stick is slower than using a house fireplace, but it lets you cook in more hidden outdoor spots.
If you are cooking fish or relying on campfires for survival, the DayZ fishing guide and DayZ health guide are useful next reads.
Farming & Sustainability
Grow food and improve long-term survival.

Garden Plot Basics
Use a shovel, pickaxe, or hoe on suitable ground to create a garden plot. Plant seeds, add water, and use garden lime as fertilizer to speed up growth.
Harvest crops while they are ripe. If left too long, plants can die on the stalk.
Weapons & Defense
Craft weapons and defensive tools for PvE and PvP survival.

Finding Knife Materials
Tools like a pipe wrench, hammer, or crowbar can gather small stones from rocks. A pickaxe or sledgehammer can gather large stones, which can then be split into small stones.
Bone Knife Efficiency
Crafting a bone knife directly uses 2 bones, but using bones against a rock can make a bone knife with only 1 bone. This helps stretch early animal resources further.
Explosives
Craft and attach remote detonation devices for advanced traps, raids, and high-risk PvP situations.

Explosive Crafting Warning
Explosives are high-value items and should be handled carefully. Attaching a remote detonation unit lets you trigger the explosive from a safer distance instead of relying on direct placement or timing.
Improvised Explosive Tip
Improvised explosives are crafted from a small protector case and an electrical repair kit. Once crafted, they can be combined with a remote detonation unit for controlled detonation.
